What are Carbohydrates?

Carlie Pachasa RDN, LD

Has anyone ever told you to eat "good" carbs and you thought to yourself you have no idea what that means? You are not alone! Although I would prefer not to label foods as "good" or "bad," I will try to explain what I believe this phrase means and how you can apply the information to your life. Our bodies prefer to use carbs for energy and will use them before turning to fat and protein. Our brain, nervous system, muscles, and red blood cells LOVE them. There are two types of carbohydrates, simple and complex.

  • Simple carbohydrates (sugars) are found in foods like cookies, syrups, dairy, and white flour foods. These foods are simply digested and will give you a boost of energy quickly.

  • Complex Carbohydrates (starches and fibers) are found in whole grain foods like bread, pasta, rice, oatmeal, popcorn, beans, fruits, and vegetables. These foods provide long-lasting energy because the body has to work harder to digest the starches. Fiber, however, can not be digested but is great for keeping you full, preventing disease, and staying regular.

We know we need to eat to stop hunger pains and keep us alive, but what does it mean when someone says carbohydrates provide energy?

During digestion, simple carbs are like lighting a piece of paper on fire. While complex carbs are setting a log on fire. Both paper and the log are made of wood, both materials provide warmth, but one will finish burning much quicker than the other. By incorporating more complex carbs into your diet, you are more likely to feel satisfied between meals and not feel tired after eating.
